Search for the right names

The vintage toucan desk lamp was designed by H.T. Huang and made in Taiwan through the 1990s. Sellers list it under several names, so search for all of them:

  • Huanglite toucan
  • Huangslite toucan
  • Tungslite toucan

Vintage toucans came in bold color pairings. Photos of real originals are on the way; until then, these illustrations show pairings that turn up on vintage listings.

Where vintage toucans turn up, and what they cost

Originals appear on vintage marketplaces such as 1stDibs, Chairish and Etsy. Asking prices we've seen run from about $250 to over $600, depending on color, condition and the seller. An asking price isn't a sale price, so it's worth comparing a few listings before you commit.

Checklist

Seven things to check before you buy

1. The label or maker mark

Look on the base for a label or sticker naming Huanglite, Huangslite or Tungslite. Some originals have no mark at all, so ask the seller what they know about where it came from.

2. The plug and voltage

Some vintage toucans were made for 220 to 240 volt outlets. In the US, have one rewired by an electrician instead of relying on a plug adapter.

3. The cord and wiring

Many of these lamps are decades old. Ask for close-ups of the cord and look for cracked or brittle insulation.

4. The light source

Find out what bulb or tube it uses, whether it still works, and whether you can still buy a replacement.

5. The folding beak

The beak should fold down against the body and back up smoothly. Ask for photos with the beak in both positions.

6. The plastic

White parts often turn yellow with age, and colors can fade in the sun. Ask for photos in daylight and check for cracks.

7. Shipping

Ask how it will be packed. A long plastic beak needs real padding to arrive in one piece.

Safety first: have any vintage lamp checked by a qualified electrician before you use it.
