2700K vs 3000K: which warm light is right?

Both get sold as warm white, but they don't look the same. Here is what each one looks like, where it works best, and how to choose the right color of light for a desk, bedside or living room lamp.

The basics

What the K number means

The color of white light is measured in kelvin, written K. Lower numbers look warmer and more amber. Higher numbers look whiter, then bluer. A candle flame sits around 1900K, a classic incandescent bulb around 2700K, and midday daylight between about 5000K and 6500K.

2700K vs 3000K

The gap looks small on paper and is easy to see in a room. 2700K has a little more amber in it. 3000K is a touch whiter and crisper.

Which one should you choose?

Short version: 2700K for relaxing, 3000K for a bit more clarity. Here is how that plays out around the house.

Bedside and evenings: 2700K

Warm light has less blue in it, and lighting guides commonly suggest warm, dim light in the evening. A dimmer lets you turn it right down before bed.

Living rooms: 2700K

The same glow as the incandescent bulbs most homes grew up with. Easy to live with, and kind to skin and wood tones.

Desks and reading: 2700K or 3000K

Either works. Choose 2700K if your desk is also where you unwind, or 3000K if you want things a little crisper while you work.

Kitchens and bathrooms: 3000K

A slightly whiter light makes counters and mirrors easier to see by, while still feeling warm.

Color work and crafts: 4000K or more

Matching paint, thread or filament? Use a neutral or daylight lamp with a high CRI, which shows colors more accurately.

Keep one room consistent

Lamps you see together should be close in color. 2700K and 3000K sit fine side by side; 2700K next to a 5000K bulb looks patchy.

Four things to check before you buy a bulb or lamp

  • The K number, not the name. Brands use "soft white" and "warm white" for both 2700K and 3000K, so read the number.
  • Lumens for brightness. Brightness is measured in lumens, not watts. A bulb sold as a 60 watt replacement gives about 800 lumens, and a 40 watt replacement about 450.
  • CRI for color. The color rendering index shows how naturally a light displays colors, on a scale up to 100. 90 or higher makes skin, wood and food look true.
  • A dimmer. With one, a single lamp can be a reading light at full brightness and a soft glow at night.

The Toucan Lamp glows at 2700K

The Toucan Lamp has a warm white 2700K LED in its beak. That's the color of a classic incandescent bulb, the glow lamps had back in the 90s, so the retro design looks the way you remember it at night.

The brushed-aluminum touch button on the base dims it, so the same lamp works as a reading light or a soft night glow. Tap "Lights on" to see it lit.

Quick answers

2700K vs 3000K questions

Is 2700K good for reading?

Yes. Color temperature sets the mood; for reading, brightness and aim matter more. A 2700K lamp that is bright enough and pointed at the page works well.

Is 2700K the same as soft white?

Often, but not always. Brands use soft white and warm white for both 2700K and 3000K, so check the number on the box.

Can I mix 2700K and 3000K in one room?

Usually, yes. They are close enough that most people will not notice. Mixing warm bulbs with 4000K or daylight bulbs is what makes a room look patchy.

Which is better for a bedroom, 2700K or 3000K?

2700K, ideally on a dimmer. It is the warmer, softer of the two.
